    Dean is so determined to be normal about Cas and what Cas said, so determined for things to get back to normal, that he starts counting his victories. First, he can touch Cas just like he did before--easy. He can comfort him after a nightmare--no problem. He doesn't even think about the fact that Cas is in love with him when Dean's moving around the bunker post-shower, as dressed down as he ever got before, just boxers and his robe closed over them. He's not even worried. Not even thinking twice about what Cas might see. Very natural, very cool; he can be cool about this.

    It's just that, along with that, he can't stop thinking about the fact that Cas is in love with him. And when they start watching that fucking schmoopy ass show with Jack, Dean can't stop thinking about that kid, Nick, and where his story's going to go. Why does it matter so much to him anyway?

    I’d like to kiss him, Dean thinks, as he watches the last seconds on the last minute of the year disappear, apropos of nothing and everything at once. It’s a little thought, one of those ones he has here and there, while watching a movie together or teaching him how to use a washing machine or just thinking of him in the quiet of night, still and soft. Not like the ones that stab into his heart and twist—he gets those, too, nearly just as frequently—but sweet and easy to look at, wrap up, put away. Easy if twinging. It always has to hurt some, good that it does; that’s how Dean knows it’s really love.

    He’d like to kiss Cas, but he won’t. This is his resolution.

    “If you don’t want me to go with you...then don’t go, Dean,” the ex-angel finishes with a note of casualness in his voice, as if the decision is simple.

    Unfortunately, Dean Winchester is nothing if not stubborn.

    He sucks on his teeth for a moment, roughly picks up his duffel, and slings it over his shoulder as he storms past Cas in the doorway with a bite of, “Go get in the damn car,”.

     

    (TLDR: Cas is rescued from the empty, human. Dean wants to stop hunting because he loves Cas, but can't figure out how to let himself; however, he doesn't want Cas to hunt either, because he loves him. Conflict, angstiness, and love ensues.)
