    The light is bright, painfully so, but Peter can’t jerk away, he can’t do anything because his body is being crushed by something heavy but not entirely unpleasant.

    “Hey, there he is,” Mr. Stark’s face appears in front of him, blocking the white light, thank God, then May’s face is next to his, blurry and hazy but it’s them and that’s nice.

    “Hi, baby,” May smiles but she looks sad. So does Mr. Stark.

    Peter worried at his lip, the hologram blue glowing all around them. “What if I mess up?”

    “You’re not going to,” Tony replied, eyes on the screens again. “We drifted fine the other day. We had a great Neural Handshake and we train together daily. We’ve got this."

    Peter hesitated. “We have?”

    “Yes, Parker. We have.” Tony stepped back from his screen and looked over to Peter. He looked so young behind his visor, and he’s a kid he’s a kid he’s a kid ran through his mind unbidden. “We’re a team, okay? I’ve got your back and you’ve got mine."

     

    When aliens came to Earth, they came out of the ocean, not the skies. To combat them, humans created jaegers: monstrous robots so massive they needed two pilots to control them. Ten years into the war, Rhodey is knocked out of commission, and the Iron Avenger jaeger is in need of a new pilot. Tony isn't particularly happy about Peter Parker, a sixteen year old, joining the fight by his side, but sometimes you aren't given a choice in these things.

    “Pete,” Tony’s voice says. “I’m heading to your location.”

    Peter narrows his eyes. Karen’s colors turn from dark red to a softer blue, which he takes as her celebrating Tony’s imminent arrival. How imminent? What?

    “What?” Peter says again. Like an idiot.

    “Your numbers aren’t what I like to see and you stopped moving and I was in the area, anyway. You know. Doing Iron Man things. You okay?”

    Peter blinks. He sees some more lights out ahead of him that he thinks are headlights, and he feels like Karen is trying to even out his vision by changing how things come across on the HUD. She’s failing, but he won’t say that. Can she read his brainwaves? No. Definitely not. Maybe. Either way he doesn’t wanna be mean to her, so he stops thinking.

    Ugh, his side hurts.

    Peter is sick of waking up in places he doesn’t belong.

    He groans, the throbbing in his head astronomical out of this world, and he knows he’s laying on some stone ground that’s wet and disgusting and not at all comfortable, but the throbbing and the pain is so huge and horrible that he just wants to keep his eyes closed and fade back into unconsciousness.

    But he knows he can’t do that.
