Serena Stark was born 2 years after Robb Stark, she went to Kings Landing with her father and sisters and was taken prisoner once her father was killed by Joffrey Baratheon. Serena sees a way to get out from underneath Joffrey and Cersei's thumb when Tywin arrives in Kings Landing and saves the city.
Tywin Lannister knew that Serena was the key to the North and the best way to keep her under control was to have her marry someone in his family.
