Gwaine can’t stay in Camelot a second longer.
As soon as he manages to stand up on his own two feet, he’s gone. He leaves in the dead of night, with nothing but a note as goodbye.
He rides for as long as his body can physically endure before he needs to stop to throw up from the pain, force some water down his throat and keep going. And going. And going. The sun rises and sets and rises again, but Gwaine doesn’t dare stop.
He only has the vaguest idea about where he’s going, something Merlin mentioned once about where he might go if he were to leave Camelot which, of course, at the time they thought would never happen. Something about a lake by the mountains.
Gwaine’s well aware that there’s every chance that even if he finds the lake he’s looking for and even if that was, in fact, the lake Merlin meant, Merlin and Lancelot might still not be there. If they’re smart, they won’t be there. Or anywhere else Gwaine would know to look.
But still, he goes on. If he can’t find his friends, he’ll just return to the life of the wanderer.
The only place he can’t go is back.

Merlin is not oblivious to what is said about him around the castle, especially after years and years of gossiping with Gwen.
“That boy can’t serve a drink to save his life.” Someone might say. “Why does King Arthur keep him around?”
And, thankfully, the answer is never “He’s a powerful warlock destined to protect King Arthur while he unites Albion and brings magic back to the land.”
No.
Instead, they might say “He services the King in ways the rest of us can’t.”
Or “Have you not noticed how close he is to some of the knights? I wouldn't be surprised to learn he’s being kept around as a mattress warmer.”
“I saw him sneaking out of Sir Leon’s chambers early one morning. You can’t blame a noble knight for making use of such a service.”
And sometimes…
Sometimes Merlin wishes it were as simple as that. Not the part about bedding members of the court out of some misguided sense of duty, of course. But the part about being able to keep his relationships casual. Unattached. When the truth is that Merlin falls far too hard far too easily.
And he’s been giving away little pieces of his heart since his very first week in Camelot.

“House!” She calls loudly after there’s no answer. “I know you’re in there.”
It takes several rounds of louder and louder knocking for House to call back. “I’m busy!”
“I don’t care!” Cuddy yells. She doesn’t even know if she believes it that he is busy, for all she knows he’s been expecting her since he took her laptop.
Abruptly, the door is pulled open. Just a few inches, so that House can poke his head out. “Something I can help you with?” He asks breathlessly.
Cuddy’s too tired for this shit, it’s been a long day of travel and business dinners and all she wants is to get this over with so she can go to bed. She slams into the door, forcing House to step back and open it further.
She blinks when she can see more than just his head. A lot more.

Steve blinked. Once, then twice, then a few more times for clarity. “Jealous?” he repeated, trying it on for size.
“Yeah, jealous cuz I got to her first,” Bucky explained, eyeing his friend with interest.
Steve shook his head quickly, because no, he wasn’t jealous of Bucky, but he was starting to think he had been very jealous of Wanda.

The camera cuts to a cell phone video, shot vertically, of the banks of the Potomac with Bucky hunched possessively, almost predatorily, over Steve's beaten and dripping wet body, (replacement?) mask somehow back on his face, everything concealed except his eyes and forehead. Off-camera one voice calls for an ambulance as another voice asks, "Are.... are you a new Avenger? Did you just save Captain America?"
Bucky looks up, eyes momentarily confused but quickly turning to a stormy glare before snarling, "I fucked Captain America. In the ass."
(The mask doesn't come off until the helicarrier. This complicates things.)

Summary
In 1938, there's a bar in Brooklyn called Sully’s where people are safe to be themselves. Behind the bar, a girl pours drinks. She's always got a big smile for Steve and she says queer like it's a good thing. On a regular basis, she takes his shoulders in her hands and tries to shake sense into him, saying, "When will you do something about that best friend of yours?"
In 2012, Bucky’s gone, but Steve’s not, and the girl’s hands are too old to shake him. She does her best to make him see sense anyway.
Steve had people who loved him before the war, and it turns out a few of them are still around when he finally comes home.
