    It starts small.

    Since Mr. Barrow’s trouble, as the family like to call it, Tom has been trying to…well, to make a friend, he supposes. Difficulty being, he’s never actually had a friend quite so fractious about it all as Mr. Barrow, and that’s saying something, given the company he likes to keep. In fact, trying to befriend Mr. Barrow is, Tom imagines, what it might be like to try and befriend a particularly prickly cat, one who’s recently fallen in a river and been done the indignity of being fished out by the scruff of its neck. Not a comparison he’s unwise enough to share with Thomas — though, there was certainly a time it would’ve amused him to watch the underbutler’s expression pinch as if he’d tasted something sour at the observation.

    It still amuses him to think of, really. But —

    Friends. Tom is trying to be friendly.

    After Thomas' suicide attempt, Tom realizes he's not been the man Sybil would've wanted him to be, where Thomas is concerned.
