Her walls do not remain white and barren forever.
First, texts that she was deciphering for Merrill, stacked neatly atop her drawers. A handful of colourful paper ships that she’d assembled with Roslin one afternoon, bored, as they waited for Ananke to review their submissions, proudly sat atop the stack of books. And then Ilana had surprised them one unassuming afternoon, when her research paper had been approved for peer review. A happy round of tears had been accompanied by a sudden sprouting of flowers, alerting them of her Spring heritage; the lilies now sat, in a mason jar beside the paper ships.
Some days, she is thankful for the colours. Most, she feels like a cheat.
