Steve turned to face him fully. Danny saw it in the set of his jaw, the way his throat worked, the terrible resolve gathering behind his eyes. And he knew, immediately, that Steve was going to say something. Something irrevocable. Something that would abso-fucking-lutely destroy the already fragile pretense he had been clinging to.
"Danny, I—"
"Did I say you could talk?" Danny's voice cracked like a whip, too sharp, the edges fraying with panic. "I'm not done. Drive. Keep your eyes on the road and your mouth shut."
Steve blinked. "But—"
"I said mouth shut." Danny's hands were trembling, but he made his face hard, made his eyes angry, because if Steve saw even a fraction of what was underneath—if he knew how close Danny was to breaking—he wouldn't stop. He'd keep talking, and Danny would have to hear it, and he couldn't. He absolutely couldn't. "One more word and I'm getting out of this car. Right here."
Danny Williams is excellent at denials. Steve McGarrett is not.
