    Summary

Julien learns a bit of magic and tells Occtis a story from his past.

    Julien flexed his fingers.

Occtis had been teaching him the verbal and somatic components of this spell for weeks now. It had seemed genuinely hopeless that Julien would be able to manage twisting his fingers in just the correct way while pronouncing the words of power at the precise cadence necessary, with the combination of such things managing to successfully pull at the fabric of reality itself.

He’d grown up watching Aranessa perform wonders, knowing that the beauty she created was from her blood and her connection to the realm of Faerie. It wasn’t ever anything within his grasp to touch. Knowing that the closest he would get was when others would choose to cast their magic upon him.

But Occtis had brought magic to him.

"Once she was done scrubbing, she pushed him into the pool to rinse it out. After he’d shaken his head underwater like a dog, she pulled him back and started applying another oil.

“I don’t use that one,” he said, rather alarmed.

“You’re using it now,” she said, stroking it through the curls.

    “I have a strict routine – “

“You’re such a fucking brat,” she murmured, yanking on a piece of hair.

On the way back to Dol-Makjar, soaked with rain as they cross the Dvalmar Pass on foot, the Seekers find an unexpected bathing-house. Julien, still carrying injuries from an ambush on the road, takes a bath. Thaisha joins him, and washes his hair. There is hair-pulling. Julien likes it. Occtis gets involved. Vaelus stays out of all this mess.

Or: the Seekers end up in a mysterious spa, and Thaisha uses Julien as a stress ball.

    Summary

They are on the road when the rumours first reach them. Dol-Makjar is in chaos, in uprising, and this newborn revolution already has its first martyr. They say that when it became known what the Halovar had been trading away to the hells that the people surged in protest to their gates, and the Halovar lost control of their demons. They say that Captain Nayar broke ranks with the Sundered Houses in defense of the crowd, and many of his guard followed. They say that he rallied them with a display of sorcery so fierce it could only be old-blooded, that as he fell you could see in the smoke and sparks the form of a dragon roaring in anguish. The bold, excitable and perhaps foolish talk of lost great Houses, speak the name of Obridai with breathless eager voices. Risen from the ashes in Dol-Makjar’s, and perhaps Araman’s, darkest hours.

Julien and the others have barely had time to steady themselves after this new loss when two pigeons arrive, speaking with Murray and Hal's voices.

“We’re sending the stupid brave fucking idiot to you. Hide him ‘til he’s recovered. Tie him down if you have to.”

“Please take care of Azune, don’t let him hear it all at once. Poetic licence may have gotten the better of me.”

    Summary

“You know what? Nevermind. It’s not worth it.” Occtis starts folding himself into bed, prompting Julien to sit up, aggravated by the principle of the thing.

“Just ask me the fucking question.”

“I don’t just want to ask one, I want to—gh—do you know how a conversation works?”

“You want to get to know me?” Julien says with horror.

    — On the road to the Golden Orchard, after the second-worst week of their lives, Occtis and Julien play stupid games.

    Summary

    [Spoilers for C4E31.]

“You embarrassed me,” Occtis hisses. “You embarrassed me today.”

The boy is standing over the bed, gaze fixed on the mattress, seeing nothing as his clever mind fixates on some unknown fact of Julien’s prior conduct.

Julien tries to play the day’s hectic events back through his mind, but their flight from Dol-Makjar was a fearful one plagued by paranoia, so much so that he finds his recall hampered. He’s sure he was an asshole to everyone all day, but he doesn’t remember aiming it at Occtis, at least not on purpose.

Waiting for Occtis to volunteer information tends to involve more patience than Julien has handy, so he’d might as well ask. “When did I embarrass you?”

Occtis still doesn’t look at him. “You picked me up like a sack of grain in front of all of our colleagues.”

Of all the things to have a fight about right now, Julien feels like this isn’t the one he’d personally pick, and a stupid part of him wants to say so. An even stupider part of him wants to point out that that was last night, not today.

He manages to hold his tongue on these two points, but he can’t keep his ire from his tone. “What did you expect me to do? Leave you behind?”
