    Lloyd thought his mom and stepdad were coming back.
    Nine hours later, he’s still alone on the same bench, cold, exhausted, and trying not to panic. Kai only finds him because of a late-night ice cream run and one wrong turn home.
    At the same time, Emiko arrives in the city to visit the kid she’s always treated more like a little brother than a nephew, only to realise something’s wrong almost immediately. Lloyd is missing, nobody seems worried enough about it, and the story she’s being told doesn’t add up.
    And as Lloyd settles into a place that finally feels safe, strange things start happening around him—small at first, but impossible to ignore. Whatever he’s hiding, whatever’s been buried in him for years, it’s a lot bigger than anyone thinks.

    Kai had been cautious in his approach, knowing that she had no reason to trust him. It had been the right move; she had growled turning her flames against him the instant she noticed Kai came closer. In response he sheathed his sword and forged a tiny spark in his own palm.
