No matter what, Vespertine is always reminded of Tom. She feels him in her soul, she hears him in her mind, and when she breathes, Vespertine can still recognize his scent. This was just a reminder, a horrible, terrible, disgusting reminder that everything about her was tainted. She thought she had gotten used to it by now.
Ever since she took in the boy, however, she's begun to see Tom as well.
