Summary
Simon has never been good with kids. When a child appears out of thin air in his submarine and the COI still refuses to pull him up, all Simon can do is protect her from the horrors of the ocean. Even if he knows there's not much hope for either of them to live.
Ryland Grace is living his best life on Erid. He has a wonderful best friend, scientific colleagues who respect him, and students who adore him. Unless he decides to make the journey back to Earth, however, he doesn't expect to see another human any time soon. He certainly wasn't expecting to stumble upon a traumatized father and daughter welded into a blood-filled submarine.

This thing’s eye is bigger than my head. Grace frowned, puzzled at the last bit of wandering thought as he tried to make sense of that observation. It felt like he was being drugged once again, eyes struggling to translate the colors and lights. It would be so easy to close them instead, with the lack of pain or much of anything at all…
It took an embarrassingly long time to understand what was right in front of his eyes. The lack of oxygen was admittedly getting to his brain and messing up with reason and fright but in his defense, it wasn’t every day that you found yourself face to face with a mountain-sized human.
“Oh.”
It took him another second to realize the sound had slipped from his throat.

There's just a second where Ryland is sure he's having a nightmare.
He doesn't know a single teacher who hasn't had at least one of these bad dreams where it's a normal school day one moment and their biggest concerns are things like the email they're going to have to write to Haley's mom or having to separate Eliot and Lance because they keep talking in the middle of class and then the next there's someone with a gun on campus stalking toward a building full of children with intent to hurt as many of them as possible.
