“What are we doing today?” Carol questions as she picks a syrup-coated strawberry off Helen’s plate.
Helen smirks, “You said you’d do the yard.”
Carol’s shoulders drop, and a pout forms on her lips as she looks up at Helen and asks, “Is that what you want for Valentine’s Day?”
A snort escapes Helen, and she shakes her head, “I have a day planned for us, baby. You know that.”
Carol tries to hide her excitement, but she perks up at Helen’s words. She knew Helen had planned something for them, she always does. Always something Carol would enjoy, something where she gets to feel normal and included in the holiday without compromising her privacy. Something uniquely special for her.

Carol knows that Zosia’s smiling that eerie smile they can’t get rid of; the reflex-pleasure at taking care of her and working to construct her happiness. Carol hates it less now, can tolerate quite a bit of it, even ask for help on special occasions. It’s a compromise, both their natures must bend for it to work.

Helen chuckles, throaty and amused, “I asked you a question, hon.”
Carol’s brows furrow as she tries to recall what Helen had asked, already too lost in the feeling of Helen’s hands on her skin, an escape from the blinking cursor mocking her. It takes a few seconds for her brain to catch up, to remember its place.
“Oh. Yeah,” she mutters, looking up to meet Helen’s gaze. “I’m struggling with this chapter.”
Helen sighs and leans forward, murmuring, “You’re so close to your count for the week, though, aren’t you?”
“Yeah,” Carol confirms with a small nod.
“So you can finish soon,” Helen says, pressing her lips to Carol’s temple. “Why don’t I help you out a bit, hm?”

Summary
Unlike her wife, Helen walks toward Zosia first, wrapping her arms around Zosia’s lithe frame in a warm, comfortable embrace.
Zosia happily returns the hug, hands splayed against Helen’s back as they stand together for a few seconds. Then, she steps back and turns to face Carol, who has already pulled both of her suitcases out of the trunk.
“You aren’t going to say hi to me first?” Zosia teases with a pout, tilting her head as she watches Carol.
Carol freezes instantly, releasing her grip on the handles of Zosia’s suitcases as she realizes she’d jumped into chivalrous mode on instinct. A light blush paints her cheeks, and she bites her lip as she looks up to meet Zosia’s gaze.
“Hi,” she says shyly.
Zosia’s pout deepens, “That’s it? I came all this way, and all I get is a shy little hi?”
