Summary
They survive the battle. Bilbo stays. So how come Thorin isn't talking to him?
Bilbo had traced it back to the reclamation, when the golden sea of treasure had flooded Thorin’s mind and drowned him in sickness. And he’d traced it back to when Thorin was at his lowest, when he’d gripped Bilbo by the throat and threatened to release him over the ramparts, eyes cold and dark and without a hint of the amity Bilbo had come to expect to see in the depth of their pale blue. The hobbit had choked in the king’s grasp and wondered if this was the moment he would die, after everything they’d gone through together.
Yes, Thorin was brash and wayward and stubborn, and he carried with him more anger than should have been possible for anyone to carry. But more than anything, he was noble and kind.
...Nothing else mattered. The king wasn’t talking to him and the hobbit hurt.
