Summary
From the time of the Andals arrival in Westeros, and the beginning of knighthood in the kingdoms, it is a well-kept tradition for knights to not only swear their oath to the seven, but to preserve a record of the great feats of their own master and his predecessors by way of adding in lines. As such, the lineage of knight to squire is preserved through the memorization and passing of these vows, and while the words are kept secret from all but their own cohort, knights who share the same oathkeeping lineage...

There are only a handful of famed chivalric lineages that are confirmed to still exist today, most notable amongst them is the oath taken by the Dragonknight Ser Aemon Targaryen, currently preserved by his three known squires, King Daeron Targaryen the Second, his son Prince Baelor Targaryen, and Ser Robyn Rhysling. As with most lineages, it is likely there are other knights within the cohort , but those names have since been lost to time.

The man at the back of the auditorium begins to walk forward. He is tall, bulky, has an almost menacing gravity to him. Dunk freezes as the silver hair makes him unmistakeable. Maekar Targaryen. A concert violinist, one of the best playing right now, still top billing at any concert he deigns to perform in. Most known now for his work as part of the Dracarys Quartet with his brothers. Lyonel hisses between his teeth.
“You've played Gyldayn's fourth quartet in G minor, as part of an end of term recital,” he says, violet eyes pinning Dunk. Dunk nods. “My brother Baelor says you were the best part of that performance two years ago. We find ourselves in need of a 'cellist for tomorrow night's concert.”
When Duncan Pennytree, final year student at the Oldtown Conservatoire, suddenly finds himself playing the 'cello with the Dracarys Quartet, he is not just playing with a group that has influenced classical music across Westeros for decades, but with a man who, without a doubt, saved his life when he was an orphan in Fleabottom. If only he knew it.

It had occurred to Dunk in those final moments that they would probably not recover his body, that he would be nought but ash by the time the fires were brought under control. But that thought had oddly comforted him in a way, that there would be no grand funeral for the Lord Commander who had failed.
Failed to save more from the fire, failed to stop Aegon in the first place. Who knows, maybe his failure had even begun back in the hedges, maybe something he had done or not done had made Aegon the man who had done..this.
He would do anything to go back and fix it, had been his last thought before the sensations shifted from heat to cold, from fire to waves, from pain to panic.
or, dunk perishes in fire at summerhall and washes up on the sands of dragonstone. dragons still roam the skies, rhaenyra targaryen still lives and dunk quickly discovers he's not the only one lost in this time.
