Summary
He slinks up to the skylight slowly, even though deep down he already knows what he’s going to see. It’s like pieces of a puzzle falling back into place as he looks through the smudged glass at Robin, bloodied and bruised, tied to a chair. In front of him stands the Joker, face split in a grin, crowbar in hand. Jason shudders. And he waits for Robin to do anything, to put on a cocky grin and say a quippy one-liner, to fight back. Robin hangs forward on the chair, still as the dead. The Joker’s awful, grinding laughter fills the warehouse, and Jason is suddenly fifteen and very afraid.

It's not often Ranpo finds himself at a loss. But then his mind starts going hazy at the way his finger circles the fabric of his coat, how it feels under his skin, and his lollipop is melting in his mouth, clacking against his teeth whenever he moves his tongue. He grows acutely aware of every sensation, but at the same time he feels as though he's floating. He gazes lazily at his desk, and notices, when he peeks down, the darkness beneath it. It's a comforting darkness, he thinks. Not at all like the darkness when his parents died—the monsters that hid, not under the bed, but around every corner and every street.
