Magic was a property foreign to the world, but humans are nothing if not adaptable creatures, going so far as to be granted a bit of magical space to practice magic safely. Haru, a non-mage student studying folklore, finds herself in such a space, a place called Medeis, while on a study program. There she meets a mysterious but charismatic puppeteer named Humbert, and finds herself on a far more magical adventure than originally bargained for.
Well, not quite magical, since there's nothing magical about political intrigue that involved sparking war between the magical and non-magical world, but magic was involved and therefore the description.

What does it mean to be a sister? To be born is to live, and to live is to run, run forever, run that uphill slope, run alone toward something—perhaps the moment of your death, or perhaps something else. It’s a morbid thought, yes. But she’s a kid, you know, she doesn’t know about tact and only knows about honesty, about being true to yourself, and if that could be the truth then who’s to stop her from thinking about it?
Maybe that’s what sisters are for: to have someone race by your side from the start of your race to the very end, bound by blood, racing each other for eternity.
Jean Grey wasn’t always the younger one, you know.

On the first day, after finally getting a good night’s sleep, Jean heads out for a walk and a coffee.
On the second day, she takes her coffee to the bookstore and lets herself browse the shelves, trailing her finger over the spines of stories she once read with Sarah, memories that feel both familiar and foreign. (She buys a book of fairytales and puts it under her pillow as if she can bring Sarah back by osmosis, as if she can help her brain keep the memories that she’s worried will fade.)
On the third day, she opens the door holding a vanilla latte and finds Yelena Belova sitting cross-legged on her bed.

Rocky visits Grace's life support quarters with some exciting news, some time into his recovery on Erid---the biodome habitat has finally been completed.
It takes a step through the airlock and sinks down into rough sand and pebbles. I chirp and hop down after it. Grace has not seen the biodome yet, but neither have I, and in my enthusiasm I dart slightly ahead.
Grace inhales so sharply that I turn to hear him better in a panic. “Grace? Grace, what is wrong? You are hurt?”
My assumption is quickly corrected when, without warning, it bolts.
