Asriel is not being haunted by the ghost of his best friend. Never mind all the time he's missing. Never mind the days he opens his eyes only to find himself halfway through and somewhere he's never been before. Never mind the friends he doesn't remember making, the apartment he doesn't remember signing for: Asriel Dreemurr is perfectly normal, which means he is. Not. Haunted.
And you know what? He's right. This absolutely isn't a haunting.
(The voice in the back of his head would really love if he admitted she existed.)

“Didn’t think I’d get this far,” Kris tells Dess.
“Hey.” Dess taps their nose, and they peer up at it through their bangs, the vibrant brightness of her face. “I’m glad you’re here, harbinger. You’re going to figure this out.”
Kris hums, noncommittal. Somewhere halfway across the country their friends are finishing up final exams. A whole year out there, learning new things, living new places. So many things they’ve seen that Kris never has, never will. Certainly, their friends have traveled further beyond the bounds of Hometown than they ever have. Into some world that surely cannot exist. Some reality that doesn’t include them.
They know, of course, that theirs is a problem that can never be solved.
(When they’re ten years old Kris Dreemurr is shown a video by their mother. It is of a coyote that has been raised by a dog mother, with dog siblings, in a human house.)

Summary
The next day, Kris and Noelle don’t come to school. Toriel has a frantic, hushed conversation with Ms. Alphys out in the hallway before pulling Susie out there to ask her about the festival and stuff. Susie tells the truth: Kris wanted to talk to Noelle at the lake, Susie went off, when she came back they weren’t there and probably had gone home. Toriel frets and says nothing and keeps saying nothing even when Susie, some sort of fear seizing up in her gut, asks, are they okay?
Three days later they find the bodies.
(Susie and Dess, alone in the aftermath.)
