Regulus black is so lost.
He doesn't regret running away from his psycho, Christian, and abusive parents. But he does wish he did some things differently, like maybe steal more from their insane amount of savings, or wreck the house before he left. The one thing he regrets the most is not making a plan. Now he's wandering the city with a heavy bag that has as much of his stuff that he could fit into it, and he has no idea where he's going.

In this version of the story, Remus Lupin never goes to Hogwarts. His parents keep him home, afraid someone might discover their son is a werewolf. Instead he receives private magical tutoring and attends Muggle schools.
Sirius Black eventually meets Remus anyway. But Regulus Black saw him first.
This story explores how it might have changed Regulus’ fate if the two of them had found each other and he hadn’t been alone.

23 years ago, 10 Women gave birth to 14 children.
23 Years ago, the world ended.
Regulus was obviously late to the party, missing the beginning of the apocalypse by a year. His brother, Sirius, had been there from the beginning, witnessing as the world fell apart, and dragged itself back up again.
You would think after humanity failed the first time they would know how to handle a clean slate and start fresh, but as Regulus grew older and discovered more about himself and who he was. He found that the only thing that had changed was the fact death, no longer seemed permanent.
Atleast not for those unfortunate enough to live outside settlement walls.

Summary
Remus Lupin is not having a midlife crisis. It is a perfectly normal thing for a man in his mid 40s to desire a simple change in his life. Sometimes that change happens to come in the form of learning to ride a motorcycle, which then leads to events that reunite him with his ex, with whom things ended… complicated at best.
Naturally, they handle everything in the way only they can: lack of communication and giving into their desires.
