Summary
Rhys opened the door to Tamlin's room, moving carefully, one hand already braced flat against the wood in case it needed to be shut again fast.
He was right. He could smell that too, underneath it, sweeter, warmer, a scent that didn't belong to Tamlin at all.
Lucien was in the room, tucked into a makeshift nest scattered across the floor near the far wall — blankets dragged from the bed, a cloak that looked like it might have been Tamlin's, pillows piled without much order into something that looked less like comfort and more like a barricade.
The omega looked up as Rhys leaned against the doorway, and even from several feet away, Rhys could see it plainly: the glassy sheen over his eyes, the flush high on his cheekbones, the faint tremor running through him that had nothing to do with cold.
Lucien's mismatched eyes were glazed, and the scent coming off him was cloying, slightly sweeter than Rhys imagined it usually was — more cinnamon now than fallen leaves, something warm and rich that filled the whole room and made it difficult to think clearly standing this close to it.
"Don't," Lucien said, guttural, "come any closer.”

Summary
His shadows ripple across the floor, twisting in the sunlight that sifts through the window, catching dust motes like tiny stars in their folds. Lucien hesitates, then holds out a hand. Slowly, almost reverently, the shadows flood toward him, shifting and curling around his fingers, up his arm. Azriel’s gaze traces him, noting the slight tilt of his lips, the way his eyelashes catch the sunlight, the faint flush that lingers on his cheeks.
Azriel smiles, a quiet, fond curl of lips. He lets the shadows drape over the fox, but restrains them to his arms and shoulders.
Lucien wriggles as one delves through his hair, tracing the curve of his ear and lingering there, teasing in its attention. A shiver passes over the emissary, and Azriel notices, quiet satisfaction pricking at the edge of his chest.
“Az”, Lucien hisses, a little breathily. “What…”
He likes the way Lucien says his name like that—soft, unguarded, the sharp edges worn down into something almost sweet. It settles low in his chest, warmer than it should.

Lucien Vanserra was screaming again.
Not out loud. Rhys wasn't that sloppy.
Inside, where it didn't matter — where no one could hear him tear his own throat raw against the bars of a cage that happened to be his own body.
Rhys could feel him under there. Under the commands, the memory-work, the small daily adjustments that kept everything running smooth and plausible. Lucien hadn't gone quiet like the others, though Rhys had changed him differently to the others. Rhys was not quite sure why. He was still in there, awake, furious, hurling himself against the walls of his own skull every single day.
It was more interesting that way.
Rhys watched Lucien's eyes while Lucien's mouth talked to Cassian — nothing lit behind them, none of that quick foxfire temper Rhys had spent months learning to erase from the outside while leaving the shape of it intact underneath, a mask worn over its own absence. The words were smooth. Measured. Rhys's words, dressed in Lucien's voice, wearing Lucien's small habitual gestures — the tilt of the head, the particular dry cadence before a joke. -

Tamlin's eyes flicked down, to where Lucien was watching the exchange in silence. Measuring.
“A favour,” Tamlin said at last, tone edged with smug satisfaction. “One you’ll grant when I call it in.”
No.
Rhys bit the inside of his cheek, grounding himself against the immediate, instinctive rejection. Too open-ended. Too dangerous.
“A favour of equal value,” Rhys corrected smoothly, voice calm, almost bored. “And one I am able to grant.”
Tamlin’s eyes narrowed, the amusement thinning into something sharper. “You really think an Autumn omega is worth that?”
I think he deserves to be.
Even if he isn’t, by your standards.
“I want him,” he said lightly. “That’s enough.” The simplicity of it landed heavier than anything else. Tamlin scoffed, but it lacked some of its earlier certainty. His gaze flicked again—back to Lucien, to the way he sat, to the silence he held, the hazy, druged out fear.
“Fine,” Tamlin said, the word clipped, reluctant, but real. “He's yours."
