Before the Asset knew Steve Rogers, he knew someone else. A face so similar to a memory, but so very, very wrong. A Cheshire grin, wide and mean and mad, that mocked him for his forgetfulness. This man came into his life with fast fingers and a faster mouth. A man who said he looked better when he was mad, and best when he was trying to kill "quite literally anyone but myself".
The Asset did not understand what this feeling of guilt was. He didn't know why he feared this man's face, why he feared his mean laugh, why he feared the soft heart hidden under a sharp tongue. He knew he owed him something. He did not know what. He knew he knew him, knew he should have saved him, knew he couldn't.
He knew he should apologize. Should beg and plead for forgiveness he would never own.
He did not know what he was sorry for.
Or: Steve Rogers had a twin. A girl, healthy and hale, but never happy. The sinner of their family, the scapegoat, the one that stole the nutrients from his weak body in the womb, who caused his illness, his mother's stress.
Steve loved his twin.
But, the harshest lesson you can learn in life is that love is so rarely enough. And he learned that lesson too young.
