You’re too close, Fang wanted to say. Too warm. This strange thawing inside him felt too fragile, like it could break at any moment - or worse, like he might find himself wishing for more. Yet he could almost feel this warmth spreading deeper, like it was unfurling the first green sprout of spring within him. It was a terrifying thought, a softening he hadn’t invited, a vulnerability he had long avoided.
He glanced at the builder, the glow of trust in his eyes, and felt that sprout stir again. Fang knew he could crush it so easily. Fresh shoots were tender, weak to cold. One hard word, one cruel brush-off, and this fragile new thing between them could wither away.
Just because the builder had so far persisted past his steady frosts didn’t ensure it would always be the case.
It would be safer that way, to let his eternal winter reign within him, with nothing soft enough to be hurt in the endless blank gray and white.
It would be better.
For both of them.

Summary
A kid is clinging to a crouching man, ugly cries welling out of his throat, face scrunched like dread is too big for his body to hold. Till watches from afar, struck by his resemblance to himself and Ivan, the annoying boy whose features his mind sometimes forgets—the ache his body spreads in numbing curls along his limbs stunning him in place at the harrowing sight.
He hates that the aliens are cloning them like this, finds it sickening, as if ghosts are still truly haunting him, refusing to let go of the living. But there is comfort in seeing familiar features again—like proof that they existed at all, that he didn’t dream them into being.
Then the man brushes the kid’s head and straightens, turning slightly toward Till and saying something to a fellow rebel a few steps away, voice brisk, movements efficient-looking even from where Till stands.
