Yeah, Acht didn’t either. Ignoring the whole falling-head-over-heels-for-the-enemy thing, Pearl just. How anyone could walk around the world taking up so much space was a mystery to them. Guess that happened when you were basically inkling royalty. You know you can throw your weight around without any consequences.
Marina had always been the opposite. She might have been uncannily intelligent, sure, but she was always sure to make herself small.
“They’re like—” Insufferably romantic? Mind-numbingly exhausting? Annoying teenagers in their first relationship except they’re well into their twenties? “They’re the perfect couple.”
“What?”
Acht is getting increasingly annoyed by Pearl and Marina flirting in the elevator. They think they have an ally in Eight, but actually… she’s just jealous.

The whole thing took 3.7 minutes. It was impersonal, efficient, and streamlined, just the way the corporates liked it. Oh, and the new construct was screaming the whole time.
