Summary
Kara Danvers witnessed the death of Alex, her brother, on the front lines of the British forces, becoming the successor to a title she never expected to inherit.
She had never tried to exceed her father's expectations, the Duke of Sutcliffe, but with the heir's death in the Battle of Waterloo, she, who had marched to war against her father's wishes, feels compelled to return.
After three years in Belgium, Kara is back in London, and upon her arrival, she consequently discovers the existence of a nephew. Immediately, she sees in this opportunity a chance to escape the responsibilities of the unwanted title she carries, but her plans go awry when she pays more attention to the tutor of Alex's son than she should, the young Miss Luthor.
Antipathy between the two is immediate, especially because she is so close to her father, who had always treated her with coldness. The appearance of the tutor causes even more discord.
The impudent Miss Luthor arouses a variety of feelings in her, and her curiosity is piqued by the mysterious young woman who seems to have many secrets of her own. Against her better judgment, Kara desires to take her as a lover.
