Mike’s words came through with a startling clarity, their effect on Will immediate. The way his name rolled off his tongue, hanging in the silence between them, felt like an arrow poised at Will’s heart. It stuttered in his chest, and his breath hitched, a quiet, embarrassing sound.
“W…ll…” Mike repeated. “Will… I…”
The rest of his sentence was swallowed, as Mike shifted again, a small thing that startled Will. His heart rate picked up, probably loud enough to be heard through the basement.
It's September 1986 and the Byers have been staying at the Wheeler's for the past six months. Things between Mike and Will have turned worse, leaving Will to struggle with the fractured remains of their friendship. But one day Mike falls asleep and Will overhears something he shouldn't.
