Summary
Lisa has spent her whole life feeling lonely and different, even before the tragic hate crime that lead to the death of her wife, who by law was never actually able to become her wife. Now, it’s 2008 and the world is moving slowly in the right direction, but Lisa still feels misunderstood and isolated. When she’s tasked with investigating the murder of a young man killed on his mate's stag do, Lisa meets a confounding witness who immediately ensnares her with her quick tongue and unreadable demeanor. Carla is as frustrating as she is alluring, and what starts as curiosity quickly grows into obsession, and soon Carla becomes the first thing that's felt worth caring about in years.

Summary
Carla and Lisa help each other work through their respective feelings and confusion in the aftermath of Betsy's strokes.
---
She had felt bad for voicing it aloud on that horrid night in November but she had told the truth then and it returns to her mind, unbidden, now: sometimes it is hard trying to support Lisa when she is this consumed by torment.
But Carla had made a vow, and she had meant it; still means it.
Both looking in the same direction, hand-in-hand — forever.
She knows the hurt of being resented for burdening others with your own pain and upset; no matter how difficult it is to hold her up, she doesn’t want to subject Lisa to that same resentment, shame her for having emotions.
With a sigh, she gives Lisa’s thigh a firm, encouraging pat.
“Right. Indoors, now. This is an intervention, missus.”

Summary
Lisa had dropped her keys into the bowl by the door with considerably more force than necessary. “Carla, you can’t.”
Carla’s head had lifted slowly, brow arching. “You’re telling me I can’t?”
“You know what I mean.”
“No, actually, I don’t.” Carla had responded. “Sarah’s asked to see me. I’ve got a visiting order. So I’m going to see her.”
Or
Lisa’s insistence that Carla not go to the prison to see Sarah is because she has something to hide

Summary
"Oh, please tell me you haven’t had an argument with your mother in front of the whole family".
"Worse" Lisa muttered, suddenly looking very interested in the floor. "I lied".
"You? Detective Sergeant Lisa Swain, pillar of truth and justice, told a fib? Colour me intrigued. What did you say?"
"I told them I was already dating someone."
Carla let out a sharp bark of laughter. "No! Brilliant. Who’s the lucky imaginary lady?"
"Mum went into absolute overdrive. She didn't even pause for breath. She immediately declared that if I’ve been seeing someone, they have to come on the family holiday. I started panicking, trying to make up excuses – said she was busy, said she hated the beach, said she had a terrible phobia of flying. But they wouldn't have it. Mum was relentless. She demanded to know her name".
"And? What did you tell her?”
"I said Carla"
