    Summary

At the turn of the century in Kalos and in the midst of the Victini Revolution, exiled champion and heir Steven Stone has been forced to flee from Hoenn to escape the consequences of doing what's right, and he has spent the past two months in hiding at the Hotel du Roi in the Montmartre district of Lumiose City. When a theater troupe literally comes crashing through his ceiling, they drag him along with them to the notorious all-electric night club and pleasure house across the street known as the Moulin Rouge, where he is to act as their ambassador to the 'Enchanting Emerald'--the club's star performer and courtesan--in a last-ditch effort to pitch their play.

However, when Steven discovers that said star is actually the beloved friend he'd met soon after arriving in Kalos, his existence shifts on its axis. Love may be like oxygen, but when it comes to the well-mannered but jealous duke, the ambitious and mercurial club owner, and the tangled ambitions of the underworld, one can struggle to catch their breath.

(Aka, the Moulin Rouge! AU no one asked for.)

Chapter 9: Steven goes on a long overdue shopping trip for Wallace, meets two new hotel guests, and gets a well-deserved apology.

    "Dear Miss Summers,

Thank you for your application to the Littleroot Young Champions' Initiative. Eager new trainers like yourself are what make the future of Hoenn bright! Regrettably, our supply of starter Pokémon is limited, and so only a handful of applicants can be selected for this program. Your scores do not qualify you to receive one of the three…"

A dull ringing rose in her ears. She scanned and re-scanned the last sentence, as though staring at it would make it change, but it still said the same thing: "Your scores do not qualify you to receive one of the three starter Pokémon."

Well, there it was, the answer spelled out in black and white. She wasn't good enough, and that was that.

    ---

Hayley Summers is determined to become a champion. She didn't count on getting a rebellious fire hazard as a starter Pokémon, the class weirdo as a training partner, or a pair of ecoterrorists as her personal adversaries, but—what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right? And in the world of training, that's starting to look very literal.

    Summary

There’s a steady pressure slowly building behind his eyes - a throbbing pain that’s been growing for the past hour, rising in strength and spreading through his skull, pulsing with every heartbeat. It gnaws at his concentration, making doing anything harder and turning thinking into a harrowing chore.

It feels like there are nails digging at the sockets of his eyes, every move grating at the tender tissue, sending bolts of agony to his brain. Blinking doesn’t help and closing his eyes offers but a brief respite from the pain until the pressure builds back twice as fast, attacking with a viciousness of a hammer striking against the hot metal.

The clash of Gods of Land and Sea has many consequences. Steven doesn't think himself affected.
