Shane makes it very, very clear that he doesn’t approve. In his own stupid, adorable way.
First, Ilya receives three links to articles about arrested Russian activists. Ilya rolls his eyes, but reads them; it’s nothing he hasn’t seen before. Second, he receives an email from their lawyer Mikhaila with Farrah CC’d in, officially advising him not to go. Third, Shane sidles up to him on the couch, kisses his neck, and asks why they can’t just send Mikhaila.
The third attempt almost convinces him, but Ilya kisses his husband back and steadies himself; Ilya knows that, for one last time, he has to go to Russia.
Or: Ilya gets arrested for the second time in his life.

His mom fills him in, standing with hunched shoulders in a cramped, too-bright hallway at The Ottawa Hospital. An illegal check into the boards; they were worried about a head injury, because Ilya wasn’t moving and he’s usually so, so hard to take down like that. But then his heart stopped, and they had to CPR right there on the ice to bring it back. To bring him back.
Shane buckles, crouching against the wall with his head in his hands. His mom’s voice is fuzzy above him, her hair tickling his shoulder when she leans down to comfort him. Ilya’s heart fucking stopped. On the ice, in the middle of a game, he died.
Or: Ilya goes into a coma after an accident on the ice. Shane figures out how to build him a life worth waking up for.

Shane nips at Ilya’s bottom lip. “I don’t want to think about you dying. I need you, Ilya. I know you can think about it, but I need you.”
Ilya cups Shane’s face, firmly holding his head in place. “I am not going anywhere. You have me.”
Shane groans, closing his eyes. “I can’t – I don’t want to think about it.”
“Then stop thinking,” Ilya tells him. He keeps his voice soft, but he knows Shane understands it’s an order by the slight nod he gives.

Ilya presses closer. “Can’t sleep.”
Shane tugs at his hair exactly right.
Ilya starts to talk, almost automatically. Maybe this has a Pavlovian effect on him by now. Shane has become very good at managing Ilya like this, and he never should have had to.
“What if these new pills also don’t work? What if nothing works?”

Summary
Ilya’s life since July seems like a dream whenever he thinks about it too hard. He and Shane text each other good morning and video call each other good night. They talk about their day and have phone sex and rant to each other when practice doesn’t go how they wanted. Shane calls Ilya when he’s burnt out from shooting commercials, and Ilya calls Shane when he can’t bear his quiet house.
The elevator ascends up to Shane’s place slowly, even as Ilya wills it to speed up just so he can have a few extra seconds with Shane.
What if Shane finds having Ilya there overnight right before a game too disruptive to his routine? Worst of all, what if Ilya suddenly falls into one of those moods that make him sullen and useless?
As the door opens, Ilya has a wild urge to back away and keep his perfect memories as they are.
