He glances down to the word ‘LOVE’ at the bottom. It’s too loud, too harshly written. Alex doesn’t feel harsh or loud. He feels a lot, so much it’s overwhelming sometimes, but the edges are soft, not hard. There’s a glow around it, something hazy and barely tinted gold, and Alex feels like if he could reach out and put his hands near it, they would warm up like they used to when he stood in front of the old brick fireplace back home.
He glances at ‘LOVE’ and then loops back around to ‘HENRY’.
Maybe, Alex thinks, hands shaking, they’re one in the same. Whatever the fuck that means.

When June gets sick, Alex knows he'll do whatever it takes to make sure she gets the care that she needs. Even if that means convincing his nemesis/sexuality-crisis-inducing/clandestine hook-up partner/somewhat of an actual friend to pretend to be his soulmate in order to pull it off. It's both more and less complicated than it sounds.

“You little menace,” a voice says from the door, entirely too fond to be anything mean. “I told you to wait by the car, not go inside.” The man steps inside, shaking the rain from his hair, and Henry is treated to the sight of the most beautiful man he’s seen in his entire life, standing in the middle of his shop with clothes dripping to the floor and raincoat bundled up around him. He notices then the umbrella clutched in the little boy’s hand, the innocent wide eyes watching his father, and the picture forms in his head.
Or, five times Henry makes a piece of art for Alex's son on his drinks, and one time he does it for Alex himself.

Alex snorts and shakes his head. “Bullshit. “So, what you’re telling me is that my family has unwittingly created a lesbian dinosaur utopia.”
“I mean… yeah, you could certainly put it that way,” Alex allows.
Henry laughs, practically giddy. “I think that may be the best thing I’ve heard all year.”

“I’m sorry…” Henry says eventually, when he can’t stand the silence for a moment longer. It’s maybe the longest he’s ever known Alex to voluntarily be quiet for, and by the five minute mark it’s unnerving him.
“Hey,” Alex replies, reaching over to curl his uninjured fingers around Henry’s wrist, pressing lightly against the pulse point there, “you’ve got nothing to apologise for. Not ever, but especially not this, alright?”

The beach is always changing.
Alex finds it ironic that this is the first time in his life he's letting himself sit still, and it’s in a place that is never the same twice. Waves come in and replace the sand and silt with every swell. People leave behind footprints that mix and overlap and then wear away. Sand castles are built, destroyed, and built again differently.
It's a place consistent in its inconsistency.
But for now, it's home. Or something like it.

It really is a testament to how painfully single he is that a note from a faceless lawyer is enough to make him blush, while said lawyer’s daughter stares at him with her arms folded, foot tapping impatiently against the tiles.
“Well?”
Thankfully, when he was googling dishes, tamales was one of the most frequent answers, so he has enough to pull it off, “Looks like we’re making tamales.”
The girl Pez babysits from the shelter should be completely intimidating, utterly terrifying. Instead he finds himself completely under her spell as she takes on the utterly Herculean task of teaching him to cook.
It helps that he may be falling in love with her dad at the same time.
