Summary
“Well, it might not be that you have a choice,” Kirk said honestly. It was something he had been considering, however bleakly, since Admiral Stone’s call. But it seemed to him a real possibility, a way for Command to resolve matters without relying on the unlikely outcome of Spock accepting the posting.
Spock stilled. “Explain.”
“Spock,” Kirk said gently. “How would it look if you turned down a captaincy to remain on the Enterprise with me?”
“As though I value my position as first officer and science officer over one of greater command responsibility.”
Kirk was startled by his own dismay. Spock had answered in the only way he could, and that answer would damn him.
“Then, Starfleet might simply reassign you to another posting altogether in service of addressing this same question of—your loyalty.”
Kirk watched as Spock’s stillness deepened. He did not speak for a long moment.
“It is my preference, Captain,” Spock said slowly, almost completely toneless, “to remain on the Enterprise. I will not voice another.”

Summary
It occurred to Spock that merely remaining on the bed cost Jim a great deal.
“Are you in pain?”
“No.” Jim’s voice had taken on a faraway quality. He had managed to find a greater distance than the room to put between them. “No, it’s more like—” He licked his lips, then he looked at Spock. “It’s like you have something that I need, but I don’t know what it is. And I must—get closer, if only to find out.”
“Captain,” Spock said, waiting a moment. “I have nothing which you require.”
“I don’t—I don’t know if I can agree with that right now.” He rolled onto his side, curling into himself. Spock had seldom seen Jim so vulnerable, and never so cognizant of it. “Perhaps, Mr. Spock, we could discuss something else.”

Summary
Spock nodded. For several more minutes, they listened in silence to the tapes.
Then, Kirk heard Spock’s voice, an echo of the night before: “Does it suit your tastes, Jim?”
His own voice answered: “S’not so bad. You always have us in these backwater starbases, halfway to nowhere.”
As the rest of their conversation played out, Kirk fell into a sort of daze. He couldn’t account for it. He had heard both his own and Spock’s voices on recording before. But it was so—odd, or maybe so unexpected, despite the fact that they had placed the very equipment that now implicated them.
Implicated them in what? Kirk could not say; it struck him that his judgment was somehow flawed, that he was failing to register evidence correctly.
Across the room, Spock from the night before said: “Repetition does not affect the veracity of the claim.”
Kirk stood, crossing the room to where Spock sat by the window. He reached over, turning the recording off.

Summary
“You must.” Spock stopped. “I have—” Kirk had never seen Spock stumble over his words in this way. He had the sense, then, that whatever Spock would next say, he did not want to hear it. “I have committed a great violation against your person.”
A silence so profound Kirk’s ears began to ring. The words were absurd. They would not arrange themselves into any meaning he could comprehend. Bewilderment briefly eclipsed his apprehension, before it dropped back down into something like dread.
“Explain.” It came out harder than he intended.
Stillness overtook Spock; he seemed to call upon some deep reserve of strength to speak. When he did, his voice was nearly mechanical, completely monotone.
“The night we returned from Holberg 917-G, against your knowledge, I entered into your mind. I altered your memories. Their emotional content. This is likely why you are experiencing difficulties completing your report of our encounter with Flint and Rayna. You were in love with Rayna. I took that love away.”

Summary
He and Spock shared a long, complicated look.
Spock’s gaze seemed to Kirk a very sensitive instrument. Kirk could not say exactly what it was designed to register, only that their several years together likely allowed for the collection of a great sum of data. Soon, Spock would assimilate it, analyze it, and Kirk would be at the mercy of his conclusions.
“I do not fault you for giving it thought,” Spock finally said, “given the danger you encountered on Vulcan.” He paused significantly. He no longer seemed capable of meeting Kirk’s eyes. “The harm you suffered at my hands.”
“That is,” Kirk began, though he knew this honesty was going to cost him. He just couldn’t say how much. “Not how I think of those events.”
Spock was still not looking at him. “You will have to clarify.”
