"l simply want to live, however futile it may be. And I dare think I can be happy, in spite of everything." It was a straightforward and uncomplicated answer, yet it gave Shadowheart pause. There was a beat of comfortable silence, before Stephan directed a question at Shadowheart, who was lost in thought, "And you, are you happy with the meaning your faith provides you with?"
Shadowheart's answer was quick and to the point, as though thoroughly practiced, "Happy is not the word I would use. But I am content," she stated, "It is my purpose and my strength." Despite her outward resolution, the uncertainty behind her eyes was unmistakable.
