When he looks at the picture before sending it, Niko looks so much like Shane that Ilya has to bury his nose into his hair, right where the warm, sweet smell of baby is most concentrated, and then smack a kiss against his head, then over his little shell of an ear.
It’s unbelievable the way that the long stretches of tedium that come with parenting an infant crack open at least once or twice a day to reveal some of the deepest, wildest surges of love Ilya’s ever felt. It’s enough, sometimes, somehow, to cut through the sour, stagnant funk he’s been in ever since his injury, enough to make him feel like he’s fully in his body again.
