"I know you better than you think, more than anyone else in this world. I even know you better than yourself." Arthur set the bottle down and leaned forward, eyes bright despite being drunk, something like pity in his expression. "And I know exactly what you're doing."
Alfred immediately tried to argue, but Arthur held up his hand and he found himself closing his mouth, being quiet like a good little boy, letting the adults talk.
"You tell yourself you're independent, that you don't need me anymore. You tell everyone else the same thing too, you would shout it up and down the streets if you could. Hell, you did, didn't you, all those years ago. But the moment you think something happened to me," Arthur snapped his fingers, the sound echoing in the room, "you come running."
Alfred's jaw clenched. "That's not—"
"Isn't it?" Arthur smiled thinly, faint and knowing. "You couldn't even make it eleven days."

Summary
