Summary
The first of the posters is tacked up in Rivington. It’s no larger than everything else on the board—all those missing person’s pleas, and calls for help, shiny handbills for the circus across the way—and it’s just as damaged, rain-torn and sun-faded, the text, whatever it once said, long since ripped away. But it takes all of Valas’s attention. A man’s face, with a sun’s halo drawn behind. A wide collar frames his features: broad nose, dark eyes, full lips. Plunging neckline, and dark hair on his chest. There’s an optimistic tilt to his gaze. Soft hint of a smile.
When he arrives home, an amnesiac tries to get parts of himself back.

Summary
The letter tries to paint it as an honour, and in some ways it is—it’s not every day that the new widow of a second son, an elf, someone not even born here in Baldur’s Gate, is invited to join the Parliament of Peers. It arrives on thick paper, written in a careful hand, and bears the city’s seal: that familiar boat on calm seas under blue skies. But just as the harbour’s true self is more often lashed with Umberlee’s rage, Carnelia Vanthampur knows the truth of the matter is much more fraught. Of course they need her to join Parliament. She’s the only Vanthampur left.
For Carnelia, surviving the family she married into was a close thing—and now there’s a new threat, the rise of a certain Enver Gortash. She’s determined to survive him, too.

Summary
“Oh, the persimmons are out!” she says, and reaches for some on a passing tray. “Have you had one before?”
He has—Torlin had taken such pride in anything he possessed that no one else in the Gate could claim, and such fruit doesn’t grow naturally in places like this, all the rain and so little sun. He’d commissioned a spell to nurture the trees regardless, until late in the year when they’re finally pleasant to eat. But he tells her this will be his first, and she leans close to tell him more.
A thing of patience, and precision. Inedible for all the tannins, if you pluck one too soon, but exquisite if you wait, paying off in indulgent pleasure.
The first bite spills juice over his fingers, and Valas licks it off, slowly, glancing up. It’s perfectly sweet, and he finds Enver’s eye across the room as he takes his second bite.
Valas and Gortash go to a masquerade.

Summary
Valas realizes somewhere between strikes, his blade fast, his hands red, life spilled warm across his feet—he’s curious. He hasn’t felt curious, not for ages, not like this.
He’s killed for others before, of course, so many times. For coin, or for practice. For pleasure. It’s often boring, the reasons one might hire the services of a murder god’s cleric: Removal of a threat. Enacting revenge. Indulging envy, or rage, for those held back by coward’s hands. The first few targets for this man, the one he’s killing for tonight, had fit that first neat category. The next few, though, cried for Bane as they died, and begged forgiveness for their failures. The ones after that, Valas hadn’t been able discern a reason for at all, no matter how much he questioned them, snapped their fingers and drove his blades into their sweet, soft places.
He doesn’t understand this Enver Gortash. He’d like to.
Valas’s first impressions of Gortash.

Summary
“My dear Bhaalspawn,” Gortash says, sitting back down at his side. He crosses one leg over the other, leaning closer than before. “What’s wrong with taking something simply because you want it?”
Valas can’t help but look, twisting toward him with the smallest turn.
When Valas confesses the name of the person he most longs to kill, Gortash has a plan. For what is this new alliance for, if not working together to achieve their great desires?
But it’s not that simple, for one raised by Bhaal, to admit just who or what he wants. And it’s even less simple to take it.

Summary
Valas is my half-drow Dark Urge—he’s the son of my Gorion’s Ward and Viconia DeVir, and this is a collection of his fics with Enver Gortash.
Haunted One is Valas’s origin story: its first half deals with his falling into Bhaal’s clutches, and the second his entanglement with Gortash. (And is perhaps the best introduction to Valas’s character.) All other fics are arranged in timeline order, though they can each be read on their own.

Summary
Enver Gortash looked at the world and saw possibility. Businesses could be made more profitable; policies could be more persuasive. Above all, he prided himself on his ability to forge something raw and unpolished into something useful, something valuable, something worthy.
He enjoyed tinkering with metal and smokepowder, with glass and resin. His favorite material, however, was people.
Enver Gortash meets a young tiefling named Karlach and decides to make her into something stronger.

Summary
“It is the most personal way I can make an offering,” she explains. “To nourish myself with death and feast in my Lord’s name. I don’t expect you to understand, but I won’t allow you to interfere.”
It should make no sense. He knows this. Even wicked old Bhaal must have his limits. It should be revolting.
Coming from her, it seems perfectly reasonable.
He is reminded, not for the first time, that she is a piece of a god. She is not meant to be understood by the mundane. She is meant to be feared. Worshiped, even.
Enver need not remind himself that he is no ordinary man. That they should fear him, too.
