“I’m so glad you’re here, Nicaise. When I arrived at Arles and–”
“How long is he going to be here?” Nicaise cut him off. He’d rather throw himself off a cliff than hear more of Laurent’s lies.
Laurent’s eyebrows furrowed. “Who?”
“The Akielon.”
“As long as I want him.”
“Which is?”
“Forever, I think.”Nicaise survives, but things don't get easier. Plagued by his memories, he has Laurent to take care of him and he should be happy, but Damen's shadow lingers over him, ready to steal the only person he loves. Nicaise must act quickly if he wants to break them apart.

“I want it to be the way it was between us, Damen,” Laurent hissed, facing him. “I want our Summer Palace again. If it cannot be, say it now and spare my time. You owe me nothing except honesty. Is it too much?”
Damen frowned and then laughed softly, but the sound pierced like thunder. “You think I don’t want you anymore. How could I possibly not want you anymore, Laurent?”Laurent, exhausted by months spent alone without Damen, finally has him only for himself again, but nothing is as it was before. All because of one seemingly innocent comment made by Lady Vannes.

Summary
Damen's already unpleasant visit to Arles takes a sour turn when he and Laurent get into an argument.
“You’re unfair!” Laurent chokes out, wrapping his hands around Damen’s wrist, much like he did last night. “So what, just because I was –admittedly– a little cruel last night you decided to abandon me before the sun even rises? Do you want me to grovel at your feet? Beg for forgiveness?”
“I want no such thing,” Damen answers patiently. “You said yourself before we arrived here that our stay was going to last six months at most. We’re almost halfway done. Without me here to distract you, the time will fly and before you know it, we will reunite in our new palace.”
Laurent’s lower lip wobbles. “You’re willing to stay away from me for that long, then?”
Damen doesn’t hesitate to answer honestly. “If it will make you stop resenting me, yes.”
“Resent you?! I don’t–”
“You compared me to your uncle, Laurent.”

Summary
I don’t ‘seem’ like anything. You still haven’t told me what - this is. My words catch when I complete another calculation and feel my face twitch. I also happen to let out a low hum.
Is it important? ART presses down on me, slotting another system into my processes and by extension a little more of itself into my inputs. This time, it’s working itself into my prioritization and optimization systems. My mind goes pleasantly fuzzy, and my consciousness throttles itself down to the point of ART in me. My mind stutters, and I stop mid-sentence. It feels nice, doesn’t it?
I pointedly don't answer it. I won't give the smug jackass that satisfaction.
