Ice slides his thumb under the envelope fold and tears it open, pulling out a sheet of thick, heavy cardstock. In overly formal calligraphy, the invitation reads, ‘You are cordially invited to the wedding of Bradley Peter Bradshaw and Jacob Matthew Seresin on the twenty-third day of June, two thousand and eighteen.’
“We have a strict ‘No Uniforms’ policy, no exceptions. Especially you, Admiral,” Bradley says, pointing his finger accusingly in Ice’s direction. “Nothing ruins a party faster than a flag officer showing up. My ass cheeks clench up just thinking about it.”

“What’s wrong?” Mav asks, concerned.
Ice doesn’t answer for a long few seconds, just keeps thumbing his ring around his finger.
“Katie’s boyfriend called me. He wants to have lunch, just me and him. And he asked me not to tell Katie.”
Both of Mav’s eyebrows shoot up his forehead. “Well, shit,” Mav announces.
Ice just nods reluctantly. “Well, shit,” he agrees.-

When he flips open the cover, Mav presses his lips together, trying hard to fight off a smile. Ice reaches over the table and snatches the black leather bill jacket from his hands, jaw clenching as he reads the note the waitress scribbled across the bottom of the receipt.

Summary
After Goose's death during a fight with a kaiju, Maverick left the PPDC and didn't look back. But his self-destructive bender gets interrupted by Charlie Blackwood, showing up to invite him to participate in a brand-new weapons development program, codename Top Gun: the first two-pilot jaegers to ever be deployed in the fight to defend humanity. That means Maverick's going to have to get back in a piloting rig again—and he's going to have to do it while drifting with another pilot. Drift compatibility means getting each other, understanding each other, on a level nobody else can beat; so whoever his partner is, at least he's not going to get stuck with the Iceman, who pretty much hates him.

Summary
Maverick wonders if it's always going to be like this--this burning want under his skin, the total awareness his body seems to have of Ice. The surge of want that always seems to grip him, even at the most inappropriate of times. He wonders if he's ever going to be able to be around Ice and function like a human being. Thankfully, Ice seems to have the same problem as Maverick.

Summary
What Tom had not expected was that despite the exhaustion, the bloat from steroids, the soreness from surgery and radiation, and the mental exhaustion of just staying alive, he could still look at Maverick and feel the tendrils of arousal spark to life in his mind. The spirit was willing though the body had no hope of rising to the occasion. And, more shockingly to Tom, Maverick still felt attracted to him.
