Summary
After a poison steal Hans of his memories of the previous years, he wakes with a wife he doesn't remember marrying and a toddler he doesn't know.
There is also something he cannot figure out about his bodyguard.
Hans first noticed the man during his recovery, a strong figure who never seemed to leave his side. He carried himself like a soldier, though his posture was looser than the guards at the gate, and his tongue far less disciplined. He spoke to Hans with a boldness that bordered on insolence, his words more fitting for a comrade than for a servant.
In time, stern words and the reminder of position were enough to put him in his place, and his boldness was curbed. Still, the unease lingered. Hans could not recall ever appointing Henry, nor why the man seemed to look at him as though mourning something unspoken.

“Where is Henry?” he repeated—this time with a sharper edge of panic in his voice.
A maid stammered something about checking the courtyard. Someone else mentioned the stables. A third suggested he might already be at the St. Matthew's church.
Hans’s pulse spiked.
What if Henry had gone?
What if the thought of seeing Hans wed to another had undone him? What if he had left, ridden toward Kuttemberg or far away God knew where, unable to watch the man he loved bind himself to someone he did not?
No.
No, Henry wouldn’t.

Summary
Hans watches Henry even when he knows he shouldn’t.
It’s an old habit, formed sometime between their first campaign and the long rides that followed through forests scented of pine sap and damp earth. Watching is safer than wanting, after all. Watching requires no confession, no absolution.
Or, Hans wishing—not for the first time—that he weren’t Lord Capon but a damn wooden spoon.

Henry's nightmares have been worsening, and running away from them isn't helping.
Before… everything… Henry never had trouble sleeping. If it weren't for the nightmares that unfurl behind his eyelids each time he closes them for longer than a blink, he’d sleep like the dead. His ma used to say that the house could splinter and fall to pieces in the middle of the night and he would sleep through it all.
But now, Henry wakes up in a cold sweat most nights, back sticking to the bed, shivering from the chill that sweeps over him as his skin meets the air.

Summary
Freshly freed from Maleshov, Hans can't seem to get Henry's well being out of his mind, and it's killing him that no one else seems to care.
When Henry comes back from the Jewish Quarter, trembling and exhausted, Hans takes it upon himself to look after his errant squire, even if it means he has to learn a bit of alchemy to help Henry get a decent bit of sleep.
(Maybe, along the way, he can figure out just what it is he's feeling for the man, and why it hurts to be apart.)

“Well, thanks to Henry, you didn’t have to parley,” Hans replies, but the words feel cold in his mouth. Thanks to Henry, but Henry isn’t even here. Henry didn’t even get a moment to breathe before being sent off, yet again. To the very den of their enemy.
His chest aches, bitterness blooming in his heart like the slow spread of frost across clear water.

“Oh, apologies, my lord.” Henry bowed his head deeply and exaggerated. A cold splash over his thighs made him jump.
“Stop that! Jesus Christ, Henry, you’re as drunk as a lord.” Then he burst out laughing. Henry laughed too, even if he wasn’t quite sure what he was laughing at. “I’ll make a lord out of you yet.”

“Hans.”
Silence falls at last, sudden and complete. They stand facing one another, close enough now that Henry can see the pulse fluttering at Hans’ throat. Close enough to see the way his hands tremble, just slightly, at his sides. Henry steps forward and sets the book firmly on the bed between them. He straightens, meeting Hans’ eyes at last.
“I know you wrote this,” he says.
Hans’ carefully assembled mask falters, its edges cracking to reveal a sharp pain behind his eyes. Then he laughs, once, short and broken, and drags a hand through his hair. Behind it all, a small and delicate flicker of something remains, a trembling ounce of hope.
“How,” Hans stops himself, taking a deep breath before continuing, “how much of it did you read?”...
“All of it.”
OR: What if that book and potion we find under Hans’ bed in the Devil’s Den were ACTUALLY his (and written about a certain someone), and Henry finds it…?
