so jason gets into the habit of dropping the d-word in there just to see what he can get away with, want a batmobile? take it. fleeing his siblings after irritating them? you do you jay chum.________
"See, Tim?" Jason called over his shoulder sardonically. "Dad agrees with me."
He turned back to his food for a moment before the thought suddenly occurred to him that the Cave had gone near silent. He cautiously glanced back at the others. Alfred was still working away at stitching Tim up. Tim looked a little pale and sweaty, but he was glancing over at Jason with a look that was a mixture of concern and confusion. Bruce was standing stock-still, seemingly staring off into space.

Jason snarled and pulled at his restraints.
‘Ah, ah, ah,’ the leader chastised, voice light, ‘you’ve got the wrong idea. Pretty is a good thing. Pretty is useful.’
Or: Jason probably shouldn’t have tried to take down an entire gang without his armor. Fortunately, Nightwing is in the area. No one hurts Dick’s family and gets away with it.

"I have scars too." It's an offering, something small and fragile clasped in his palm. Bruce offers the hand holding the dangerous vulnerability of his life to Jason, waiting.
Jason turns to look at Bruce over his shoulder, and Bruce sees the moment understanding fills the boy's eyes. Sometimes Jason acts too old for his age, filled with empathy beyond his years.
He reaches out and accepts the small offering, holding it carefully in his own damaged hands.

Damian launched up to find him and drag him back, fully intending on cursing him out for his stupidity all the while. Except… Except Damian did not launch up. He shifted a little, but nothing more.
He blinked hard, eyes watering.
Trying again, he very specifically used his elbows, not his core, to prop himself up. He managed it, but only barely, his torso dipping too far forward as his his abdomen was unable to support his weight.
Damian’s breath caught, moving his arms a little to keep himself from fully falling.
“No.” He whispered.
“Dami?” Someone said roughly.
Richard was there after all, head still half leaned against the foot of his bed.
Damian swung his legs over the side of the bed.
The legs stayed stubbornly where they were.
“No.” He said again, almost desperate.

When Damian's cybernetic implant in his metal spine malfunctions, he is left with no sensation from the chest down and weakness in his arms. While his family are quick to adapt to the new old situation, Damian having been paralysed originally two years earlier, Damian keeps insisting that any pain that the implant causes will be worth the ability to use his body the way he wants to.

He wakes up on a bed.
Beds are completely normal places to wake up in.
The mark he had made on the piece of paper he placed beside his bed was not there. The piece of paper itself had returned to the stack in the drawer of his desk, the pen untouched.
He took both out of the drawer.
Time loop? He crossed it out.
Toxin? He crossed that out too.
Magic? He circled Magic because it was still the most likely culprit.
Jason’s farts had sent Tim spiralling so far into his own mind that he made a whole separate universe within his own head? He circled that one too because you never know.

"You just turned fourteen a few weeks ago, right?” Jason whistled. “And I thought I died young.”
Tim shook his head. Took a step back.
No. Nope. No way.
This was not happening.
Or: After Tim dies, his soul remains stuck as a ghost at the Manor. Forced to watch Dick and Bruce grieve him and unable to do anything, the only thing making the afterlife bearable is Jason. Until the day his ghost departs.
Tim assumes that Jason has passed on. But then the Red Hood breaks into the Cave. And for the first time, someone can see Tim.

Jason swallows thickly, "What?"
"My parents death is not the worst thing to ever happen to me," Bruce reiterates, as calm as Jason has ever seen him, eerily indifferent to the topic. But it's his eyes that remind Jason of the situation at hand, the way they're wide and glassy, pale blue eyes screaming for the words to stop.
They don't stop; "Losing you," Bruce continues, unblinking to Jason's expression of absolute horror, "Is the worst thing to ever happen to me."
Pain should not be quantifiable. It's with sinking hatred and pity, does Jason realise, guilt shouldn't be measurable either.
(Batman is hit with truth serum, Jason reacts to the consequences.)

Then, when Bruce is almost certain Jason's asleep and is starting to doze off to the faint rumble of the car engine, he blinks awake to hear the quietest mumble of, “I miss you.”
Bruce frowns, peering down at the boy. Jason follows his sudden confession with a small snore, completely knocked out against Bruce's chest. If not for the way Alfred glances back at them as well, Bruce would've thought that maybe he imagined it.
But he hadn't, and while confused, he tightens his arm around the boy, “I'm right here Jason. We're going home.”
All Jason does is snore in reply.
(Jason seems to miss Bruce an awful lot, even when he's right there.)

Summary
Bruce realises it then with a sudden startle, all the anger and frustration that had been building up over the last couple days freezing under his skin, blood cold.
"You're trying to make me angry…" Bruce carefully says out loud, all the pieces of the puzzle finally coming together, watching the way Jason's shoulders tense at the shift in tone from angry to a calculative calmness, "On purpose?"
Jason's previous expression, one filled with twisted amusement at Bruce's apparent annoyance is immediately replaced with something tragic. His blue eyes grow wide and fearful, and Bruce watches in delayed understanding as the boy takes a fearful step back.
(Jason's change in behavior is cause for concern. Fortunately, Bruce is a pretty good detective — most of the time.)

The other side of the call fell silent and then-
‘Ten minutes.’
The line went dead.
