“Oh, I’m so sick of you both,” Claire says, apropos of nothing.
Chris has to laugh, because if he doesn’t, he’ll explode. “Yeah,” he agrees, “I am too.”
It shouldn’t make any sense. It’s just him and Claire, sitting on his fire escape, her nose scrunched at him while he exhales smoke into her space. They had been silent up until she spoke, but he knows. “Can’t you just talk to him?” She pleads, pushing the hand holding his cigarette away from herself. She quit years ago. Chris still allows himself this one vice.
He thinks about it. He could. It isn’t like it’s never occurred to him. But he replies, “Nah. We’re not good together.”
Well. Maybe he allows himself more than one vice.

Summary
It started when he was younger, a passing thing he had done in the first foster home he could remember being in. He would close his eyes tightly, squeezing to the point he could make out sparks of color underneath his eyelids, and would take one last gasp for air before holding it just as tightly in his lungs. Then, he would wait.
The first time, he heard nothing but the sound of a porch swing creaking in the wind outside of his bedroom window. Cars passing by on the street outside. The gentle groans of a house eight times as old as him. No footsteps. Nobody coming running out of a divine sense that the little boy had stopped breathing. The world kept spinning and his lungs soon ached for the rapidly depleting oxygen. Nobody came.
The place changed, his lung capacity even changed, but the one universal constant was that nobody ever came through the door.
Maybe that's why Leon, drunk out of his mind on a motel floor, hadn't even heard the first knock.

Summary
When Chris goes on a cabin vacation over the weekend with his friends and his sister, he realizes he can’t keep pretending he hasn’t had feelings for Leon ever since China. After everyone had a little too much to drink on the first night, Chris finally works up the courage to open up to the DSO agent. If only it weren’t for the fact that Chris is a complete idiot who asks all the wrong questions. But an even bigger problem is that Leon can be one cheeky bastard.
