Chihiro had nice hands, Hakuri thought — from a distance, they were surprisingly slender, deceptively dainty. Up close, there was a thick bubble of callused skin where each of his fingers met his palm; from the katana or the forge, Hakuri wasn’t sure. His fingernails were scuffed and chipped; his cuticles were split and torn. There were descriptions of a hundred battles there, but Chihiro wasn’t just a warrior; he was a craftsman as well, and had a certain precision and economy of motion. Hakuri had seen it firsthand just a few minutes before, when he’d watched a little too intently while Chihiro peeled an apple; how his brow furrowed in concentration as the red ribbon of skin slowly unfurled, as his paring knife glided across the fruit’s flesh until it pressed flat against the pad of his thumb.
