Ronan rolled his eyes. “Jesus, Parrish. Just say you missed me.”
Still holding onto Ronan’s arms, his fingers mixed up with the leather bands around Ronan’s left wrist, Adam said, “I did. I missed you.”
“Like pulling fucking teeth.” Ronan gently flicked his wrists to rid them of Adam’s hands before he wrapped his arms around Adam, one at his waist and one at his shoulders. Adam stepped into the hug, the sleeves of his well-worn puffer coat swishing against Ronan’s sweater as he curved his arms around Ronan. Ronan squeezed, Adam laughed, and in Adam’s right ear, Ronan said, “I missed you, too, shithead.”
Ronan and Adam spend the start of winter break together at the Barns.

Someone and their cart rattled behind him, probably trying to get past, but he was two weeks away from a letter that would decide the rest of his life and was also in crisis about being in love with his best friend and the person behind him probably wasn’t either of those things. So he felt like an asshole but also kind of felt like he had earned the right to have a private conversation in the baking supply aisle for a few seconds.

“Neil knows what I want,” Andrew snaps. This is not Andrew’s fault.
“How do you know?”
Because Neil always knows. He is as fluent in Andrew’s micro-expressions as he is in German and French. He knows which head tilts mean “go on” and which ones mean “shut up.” Without ever asking, he learned what it meant to see Andrew wearing double layers of long sleeves, or taking multiple showers in a day, and learned to hand Andrew the car keys.
That has always been the most terrifying thing about Neil — his patience to wait, watch, listen, learn. The prospect that if Neil were given enough time, there would be no part of Andrew that was just Andrew’s anymore.
“He has to know,” Andrew says.
“Does he?” Renee says. “Have you ever known Neil to assume that he is wanted?”
Five times Neil tells someone that he and Andrew aren’t dating, and one time Andrew uses his words to set the record straight.
