    Summary

“Um,” Shane sighs. “It’s a curse, I guess.”
Icy dread and hot anger coalesce into a hard ball in Ilya’s chest. “What curse?”
Shane tosses his head, runs a hand through his hair. He looks out the window, because whatever is going on with him is clearly too agonizing to experience while looking directly at Ilya’s face. He crosses his arms over his chest, lurches a single step towards Ilya like he’s attached to a string pulled taut.
“Remember rookie season,” Shane says, apropos of nothing.
Ilya cuts a sharp, humorless grin. “Most of it.”
“They put you on Curse Protocol. You said it was a hazing thing. And I told you, do you remember, that I’d heard of guys—”
“Getting their dicks cursed off,” Ilya says.
“Yeah,” Shane says, eyes refusing to settle. He looks fucking hunted, like he expects to be brutally struck down in the very near future. “Well.”

Shane Hollander is not the first hockey player to be the victim of a nasty playoff curse, but this one is a little different. Ilya rises to the occasion in a couple of ways.

    Summary

So in short, Shane’s sitting at the edge of the sofa, without his stupid glasses on even though he needs them, trying to read his stupid book even though he’s already read it several times, ignoring a stupid movie that actually seems kind of fun because Ilya chose it.

This whole not letting Ilya Rozanov under his skin thing is going swell, in other words. Thank you very much.

    ~

Shane would've never expected, nor asked, to ever get trapped alone in a confined space with Ilya Rozanov; especially since his captain seems to take specific pleasure in making his presence into Shane's personal slice of hell on earth.

But when a snow storm intervenes with what was supposed to be a team-bonding trip to the cottage, that is unfortunately exactly what happens. They can be normal about it, probably.

    Summary

I don't think I can do this anymore.

In Vegas, Shane leaves Ilya Rozanov’s penthouse suite with slickness still lingering on his skin, determined to put the whole night behind him.

Before he can finish his walk of shame, he runs into a rookie who is looking for his missing friend.

What starts as helping a young player find someone who might simply have wandered off on the Strip turns into a lot more trouble than Shane has any business getting involved in during the NHL Awards after-party.

And apparently, Shane is not very good at leaving things alone.

    Summary

As free agency opens up, Shane is reminded that when asked to make the same choice Ilya is expecting him to make now, he'd utterly refused.
With the realization that his fiance has been completely unsupportive since they were outed and things imploded with Montreal, Shane decides to make a different choice.
Will it break them once and for all or be what brings them back together?

    Summary

Following an afternoon of sex and tuna melts, Shane goes searching for the explicit rules of what being 'friends with benefits' entails. In his humble opinion, they're nailing it.

Once friendship is on the table, Shane reconsiders the usefulness and immutability of the public rivalry narrative. Surely the NHL can make just as much money from a bromance as it can from a rivalry?

A missed call from J.J., a dinner at All-Stars, and an ill-considered mad dash to the airport send Shane's season in a very different direction to the disciplined three-peat he'd been planning back in October.

"This rivalry thing: it was everyone else who said we hated each other off the ice. There’s no rule that says we have to keep doing that forever.” Shane stared outside, past the blinding billboards and down at the streets below. “It was nice. Hanging out, last time.”

He knew what it looked like when Rozanov shut down, when he closed himself off and pushed the world away. He’d finish the conversation abruptly, curt, clipped, and retreat. So Shane knew he’d won when Rozanov finally answered with: “Are we six years old, Hollander? Asking if I want to play in sandbox with you?"
