Summary
In another timeline, Shane and Ilya hook up in Room 1410, Ilya slips out unnoticed, and they spend the next seven years trapped in the situationship from hell we all know and love.
In this one, Yuna Hollander walks in just as Ilya goes to leave and—through the combined power of misunderstanding, miscommunication, and a frankly alarming lack of follow-up—Shane and Ilya start dating in 2010.
Given the chance to grow up with rather than against each other, Shane and Ilya build a life thats steadier, safer, and far less frightening than their canon. Their rivalry fizzles before it ever has the chance to fully ignite, replaced by hockey’s most beloved “bromance", and in 2015, they find the courage to do the one thing their canon counterparts never got to do: tell the NHL and the world.
There is just one problem: No one believes them.
OR: Despite Shane and Ilya being out for two years, Scott Hunter is still considered the first openly gay player in the NHL, much to Ilya’s indignation.

“Is it a question that could be asked over email?” Ilya asks bluntly.
“Well, yes, but I’m here and -”
“Shane is unavailable. Please email your inquiry through and he will reply at his earliest convenience,” Ilya says, tone flat like an automated recording. “Thank you and goodbye.”
“I can see him,” Scott argues. Shane avoids looking at him, keeping his head down and eyes on his computer screen. He would prefer an email - he had a long morning of meetings and really isn’t up for more human interaction than is strictly necessary for the rest of the day. It’s almost five and Shane is counting down the minutes until the work day ends and it’s just him (and Ilya) in the office.
“Email, Hunter,” Ilya reiterates. Shane hears Scott sigh, utterly put out, before walking away.or
The one where Shane hires Ilya as his executive assistant and they fall in love about it.

Hayden and JJ both look at each other, doing the same thing with their faces that Rose and Miles did.
“Well, whatever you’re doing,” Hayden says, a slow grin spreading across his face, “keep doing it. Shane Hollander has a guy.”
Shane coughs, choking on his own spit. “I have a what?”
“A guy.” Hayden clarifies. “Like how I have an electrician guy and JJ has a concert guy. You have a club guy. This is your guy.”
My guy, Shane thinks. He’s entirely too happy with that name for a very different reason.

Summary
The thing about vampires was that it was difficult to know that someone was a vampire unless they A) told you they were a vampire or B) bit your neck and started drinking your blood. Option A was suspicious because ever since The Great Unveiling in the '80s, “Yo, I’m a vampire broooo” was tossed around so much that actual admissions were confused with jokes. Option B was much less murky.
That was why it took 3 years and Option B for Shane Hollander to realize that his hot Russian situationship was actually, for real, a vampire.
OR: Ilya is a vampire. Shane is catastrophically oblivious. It works out for them with only a little (or a lot) of blood loss along the way.
