Holly hadn't wanted to die. Kiku had never asked to be born. Nobody consulted either of them. It simply happened — no reason, no warning, no choice extended to the girl living through it.
Maybe there was a reason Kiku remembered being Holly. Maybe grief like that refuses to stay buried, no matter how many lifetimes you try to bury it in.
She didn't have the answers. Some nights she wasn't sure she wanted them anymore. All she knew was that this strange, unfamiliar world didn't feel so hollow now. Didn't feel like something she was only enduring.
Not when a golden-haired boy was around, grinning like he'd never been told the world was supposed to be dark. Like he hadn't already learned, the hard way, how cruel it could be — and smiled through it anyway.
That, Kiku thought, might be the bravest thing she'd ever seen. In either life.
This is a version of the same story as Would Anything Change? I'm trying to find a happy medium in my writing, and I don't want to delete WAC, since some may prefer it. Still, I think this one's better written, so I wanted to post it and see if anyone's interested.

She grows up into Skull de Mort, becomes part of the Arcobaleno’s dysfunctional family, never tells them she’s actually a Sky, and is an adult by the time the curse breaks. Months later, Dumbledore shows up demanding she return to Britain “for the greater good,” and the Arcobaleno — who have already been sacrificed once under that exact justification — are absolutely not having it.
