In the aftermath of the arrival of the Hail Mary, Adrian becomes used to it. Polite, not unkind deferrals. Occasional rejections, stiffly sung, claws stamped firmly in a simple, no. Not today. Perhaps not for a long time, Adrian. You have a mate to take care of.
Adrian would love to take care of their mate. Adrian cannot tell their community that Rocky is still high above them, still in the spaceship that houses the sick, dying alien Rocky refuses to leave. Adrian will take care of Rocky when they return, but they have not yet returned, and so there is nobody for Adrian to care for at all.
Adrian has waited four hundred and thirty-one years for their mate. Their mate, upon returning to them, has an alien. Adrian will adjust. Just like they always have.

Adrian knows that everything is solvable if you break it down into the right sequence of steps.
The abrupt return of their long-dead partner in an alien spaceship has brought with it a series of absurd, worrying and even dangerous problems, but they're confident they can see the solution even if nobody else can.
