Summary
Mike Wheeler gets kidnapped and drugged by mysterious people before being put into some sort of prison. A prison where all the inmates are young boys who get experimented on.
Will Byers, a boy who is quiet yet painfully scarred by this horrific place ends up being Mike's cellmate. The desire to protect him weighs heavy on Mike as he tries to devise a plan to escape while also keeping his promises to Will.
Will they escape or forever be destined to rot in a prison as lab rats?

Summary
Mike Wheeler has always been the protector.
Sometimes he becomes one without even realizing. Only when it came to Will Byers though. Will. The only person who actually made Mike feel sane. Or as he liked to put it: seen.
After all the devastation and trauma that happened in Hawkins, Mike still can't help but keep his eye on Will. Sure its been at least 8 months since then, but Mike can't help it. He can't stop that whenever he dreams, it is of Will dying.
So to stop it, Mike simply stays by Will's side. I mean what's wrong with wanting to be around your best friend all the time? It's not like he's actively showing anything other than acts of friendship, right?

Or:Mike stays at Will's side no matter what to keep him safe. But feelings that Mike has always had emerge more as he keeps Will by him.
