Johnny rolled his eyes. “Right, my bad. What else? The Loch Ness Monster? The Chupacabra?”
“John, dare I say you’re giving me the impression that you’re not taking this very seriously?” Kibum asked.
“Of fucking course I’m not taking this seriously! You want me and Ten to go and camp in, as you said big, dense woods that no one goes into often. It’s the middle of winter, and you want us to go hunt Bigfoot.” Johnny looked at Ten for support, but his companion seemed to vibrate in his seat from excitement. If Johnny wasn’t being threatened with a camping trip, he’d find that endearing. “You can’t genuinely want us to do this.”
A week later, Johnny stood at the rear of a truck with a sleeping bag under his arm. Ten shined his brand-new flashlight into his face and grinned.
“This is going to be an adventure!”
For a moment Johnny wished Bigfoot was real. The higher chance of getting decapitated by a nine-foot-ape the better.

“There is no reason,” he said. “Life is beyond reason. You know?”
“I’m not sure I do.”
He traced a finger over the dips and valleys of Jaemin’s knuckles, hooking it gently underneath his pinky. She was already two thirds buried into the ground. Clumps of black dirt clung to her pale shins, speckling the undersides of her feet like the shell of quails’ eggs. Any paler and they could mistake her for wild fungi. Maybe in a few months, that’s what she’ll become. Maybe by then she’ll be gone completely. Scattered, never to be whole again.
“I am not good. And I am nothing,” He smiled. “You have no idea how much relief those two things give me. I know these two things and there is nothing I can’t do. Nothing I can’t overcome.”
“How do you know either of those things are true?”
“Because I make them so.”
