Then, The King gasped. This was unusual, and even more unusual, rather than informing the women of the contents he held the parchment out to his wife and looked directly at Mary. Queen Charlotte then scanned the letter, her brow furrowing before her gaze also turned toward Mary.

“May I ask what the letter says?” Mary asked, tentatively. She did not wish to overstep, but based on their reactions it seemed quite apparent that the letter had something to do with her. Charlotte turned to Collin, and he nodded. “King William of Netherfield is asking… for your hand.”

    Mary’s mother gasped, “In marriage?”

Charlotte scowled, “Yes, in marriage. Obviously.”

The Queen and Queen Dowager were still speaking, but Mary was no longer listening. She must not have heard correctly, must have imagined Charlotte saying that King William wanted to marry her. It was inconceivable.

“Forgive me,” Mary interrupted, something she scarcely did, “King William has asked for my hand?”

“That is correct,” Collin responded, seeming pained. It was the first words he’d spoken since receiving the letter.

“You must accept,” her mother emphasized, “It could turn into a political divide if you do not.”
