Naruto isn't quite sure how it came to this.
Well, he does know how, obviously, but even then, he can't quite grasp it.
Kakashi looks at him with something akin to pain in his eyes. Naruto can almost taste it in the man's chakra. Not pain. Guilt.
"Nee, Dog-san, can you please let me go?" He tries. He has to try. Needs to.
He sees Kakashi's mask moving as he opens his mouth to speak, but no words come. Instead, his sensei lifts the hitai-ate covering his left eye, the Sharingan red shining in the dark shade of the trees.
"I am sorry, Naruto." The jounin takes a fighting stance, kunai in hand. "I can't let you leave."
He knew he couldn't. Naruto was a possession of Konoha. Something to be owned. A shield to protect. A sword to wound.
Naruto felt the familiar warmth of Kurama's chakra, the red fury it contained. He let it take over.
Just a little. Just for a moment.

Summary
It starts as salt in the air and song in his blood, and then a voice calling him. Naruto's not one to shy away from anything so he follows the voice because their mission is over and they are returning to Konoha tomorrow.
An island sits waiting, her people slumbering, waiting for anyone to free her people so she can protect them with a fierceness that was robbed from her.
In the morning Naruto is missing and Sasuke and Sakura have to wonder why they seem to be the only people who care. Why Kakashi is insistent they return to Konoha empty handed despite always telling them teamwork means never abandoning your team for the mission? Why there are so many damn secrets surrounding Naruto?
