I felt like I'd gone crazy, I fully remembered a life of stolen moments with Jack. Remembered the pain of that last postcard more than anything else. The indescribable loss I'd had to hold to myself for the last twenty-seven years, not like I could talk to anyone about it. Then I'd opened my eyes and was staring down the bear that spooked poor Cigar Butt over forty years earlier, joints looser than they'd been in decades. I’d chased after the mules and found as much food as I could, then followed the trail to the campsite.
