    Summary

He realizes it right before everything goes to shit. He’s just standing there in the loft and Eddie’s handing him Christopher’s backpack and talking about “he’s not that fast” and “order pizza” and Buck sort of stares at him—partly in shock, partly in reverence—and he thinks "I love you." He shoves it down immediately, of course, as far down as it’ll go, but the fact of the matter is, it’s there somewhere, floating around inside of him. He can’t get rid of it now.

Not that it matters all that much, though, because there’s the whole quitting thing and the lawsuit thing and the argument in the grocery store and by the time he’s given his (re)start date he knows; he well and truly fucked up.

    Summary

It started as an outlet, at first. A way to let out his anger in a controlled manner, with a willing opponent who would offer him the pain that he deserved.

He felt itchy. Teen pregnancy in a Catholic household had cloaked him with such a thick layer of shame that he needed a way to forget.

It was a good thing, he tells himself.

It was an honest thing - born out of good intentions.

    Until it wasn't.

    Or

Instead of enlisting in the military, Eddie makes money via an underground fight club in Texas. After threats against his family are leveled, Eddie finds a way to Los Angeles with the help of Athena Grant.

Now working as private security, he begins working for Evan "Buck" Buckley, an arrogant and hot-headed singer/songwriter who may just give Eddie Diaz a run for his money.

    Summary

The thing was, the 118 was full of gossips.

Eddie had been at the station less than a week before Hen and Chim wrangled details about his “hot young thing” from him (“Buck is only 4 years younger than me, he is not a ‘hot young thing’!” Eddie complained.)

And Bobby was open about his worries for his son’s lack of direction and the secrets he appears to be keeping (“I just wish I could help Evan find the thing that gives him purpose,” Bobby lamented.)

It just made it all the more ridiculous (and horrifying) when Eddie realizes he’s been dating his Captain’s son this whole time (“Defiling his baby,” Chimney cackled, because he clearly wanted Eddie murdered.)
    --
Or, the AU where miscommunication abounds as Eddie seeks advice about his new relationship, Bobby despairs over his adopted son's career prospects and his refusal to talk about it, and Evan Buckley-Nash juggles training at the fire academy, building a family with his new boyfriend, and trying to work out how to tell his overprotective dad that he's already chosen the life he wants, actually.

It takes a goddamn tsunami, of all things, to get the story straight.

    Summary

“I have no idea what’s going on.” He was embarrassed at the whiny note in his voice, but he couldn’t swallow it away. “I mean, the last thing I remember, I was telling my parents that I was leaving Texas. And then all of the sudden I wake up and it’s like—”

Like some stranger named Buck had infiltrated every corner of his life. That’s what it felt like.

    ——

Amnesiac Eddie tries really hard to hate Buck. It doesn’t stick.

    Summary

“I didn’t know it was you.”

Buck huffed out a loud sigh. “Me either. Surprise, I guess. My first name is Evan. Is that all you wanted?”

“No, I—I wanted to say thank you. I don’t know how—how I can ever repay you—”

“Jesus,” said Buck, and he raked his hand through his curly hair in clear frustration. “I didn’t help a kid during a tsunami so that someone would pay me back for it.”

“No, no, I know you didn’t, I just—” Eddie broke off when he saw Buck open his mouth.

“You don’t . . .” he started, shifting his eyes back to Eddie. “You don’t talk to him like that, right? What you said to me, in the locker room,” Buck clarified, impatient. His clear blue eyes pinned Eddie like a specimen in a lab; some low form of life that was so incomprehensible people had to study it. “You don’t say shit like that to Chris, do you?”

Eddie felt the blood drain from his face. Somehow, in a life full of bad choices, he'd never felt regret quite so acutely. Buck didn’t just think he was an asshole; Buck thought he was a bad father.

    -----

In a world where everyone's timing is just a little off, Buck and Eddie take a few more missteps on the way to finding each other.
